GEPCO (Gujranwala Electric Power Company) serves Gujranwala, Sialkot, Gujrat, Narowal, Mandi Bahauddin and Hafizabad. This region has a strong small-industry base — Sialkot's sports and surgical goods, Gujranwala's metal and fan manufacturing, Gujrat's furniture and ceramics — alongside millions of homes. This guide explains how a GEPCO bill is calculated and what each charge means.
Rates change through NEPRA and government notifications, so confirm the current figures with official sources.
What to check first on a GEPCO bill
- Reference number (14 digits) — used for duplicate bills online.
- Tariff code — A-1 residential, A-2 commercial, B-1/B-2 industrial, D agricultural.
- Sanctioned load and meter number.
- Previous and present readings, units consumed and the 12-month history.
The cost of electricity
Residential consumers pay according to slabs. A household that used 200 units or less in each of the last six months is protected and gets lower rates in the first slabs. A household that crossed 200 units in any of those months is non-protected and pays higher slab rates.
Small factories and workshops are usually on industrial tariffs. Larger connections have time-of-use meters with separate peak and off-peak rates, and fixed charges based on maximum demand.
Adjustments you will see
- FPA: monthly fuel price adjustment, positive or negative, decided by NEPRA.
- QTA: quarterly adjustment for capacity and other costs.
- Deferred/previous adjustments: when spread across months by the government.
Remember that FPA is usually applied according to the units of the reference month, so a high FPA line can appear even if you used less electricity this month.
Taxes and charges
- GST — charged on the taxable electricity amount.
- Income tax — on commercial/industrial bills above thresholds; filers can adjust it in their tax returns.
- Further tax and extra tax — for unregistered or non-filer commercial and industrial consumers.
- Electricity duty and PTV fee — removed from electricity bill collection in 2025.
Example: workshop with a three-phase connection
A metal workshop on industrial tariff pays for peak and off-peak units, a fixed charge based on its demand, FPA/QTA per unit, and applicable taxes. If the workshop's sales tax registration is not linked to the connection, further tax may also be charged. Linking registration and running heavy machines off-peak can save a lot each month.
Common GEPCO bill problems
- Over-billing / estimated reading: compare the bill with a dated meter photo.
- Wrong tariff: a home billed as commercial (or vice-versa) pays wrong rates.
- Detection bill: extra units charged after alleged meter tampering — you have the right to see the inspection report and appeal.
- Arrears not cleared: keep stamped paid bills for at least a year.
Saving tips
- Stay under 200 units in winter to regain protected status.
- Install capacitors in workshops to avoid low power factor penalties.
- Use LEDs and DC inverter fans.
- Check FPA announcements so you are not surprised by temporary increases.
