Pakistan's electricity is delivered to homes and businesses by distribution companies (DISCOs). Outside Karachi, these are government-owned companies that buy power from the national grid through the Central Power Purchasing Agency and sell it to consumers under tariffs set by NEPRA. Karachi is served by the privately owned K-Electric.

Who regulates them?
- NEPRA (National Electric Power Regulatory Authority) sets tariffs, approves FPA/QTA, and handles consumer complaints and performance standards.
- The Ministry of Energy (Power Division) sets policy, and the federal government notifies uniform tariffs and subsidies.
- PITC (Power Information Technology Company) runs billing systems and online bill portals for the government DISCOs.
Why tariffs are mostly the same
Each DISCO has its own cost, but the federal government notifies a uniform national tariff for consumers of government DISCOs, covering the differences through subsidies and cross-subsidies. That is why a LESCO and a QESCO residential consumer usually see similar slab rates.
Reforms and privatisation
The government has discussed privatising or changing management of several DISCOs as part of power sector reforms. Any such change may affect customer services in the future, so watch official announcements.
